“We too often forget that people held before trial are presumed innocent and should be treated as such,” said Claire Guthrie Gastañaga, executive director of the ACLU of Virginia.
Advocates including Public Defenders and the ACLU are working with prosecutors, magistrates, and jail officials to facilitate release inmates being held pre-trial, particularly for misdemeanors and non-violent felonies.
