RTD: Advocates call for release of nonviolent inmates awaiting trial as courts grapple with COVID-19

“We too often forget that people held before trial are presumed innocent and should be treated as such,” said Claire Guthrie Gastañaga, executive director of the ACLU of Virginia.

Advocates including Public Defenders and the ACLU are working with prosecutors, magistrates, and jail officials to facilitate release inmates being held pre-trial, particularly for misdemeanors and non-violent felonies.

The impact of COVID-19 on the criminal justice system will be a story that continues to develop, as states and localities grapple with the unique effects the virus will have on jail and prison populations.
