Why is my case in Federal District Court?

Cases in Virginia and Washington, DC, involving federal crimes are tried in federal district court such as the Eastern District of Virginia, Alexandria (EDVA) or the United States District Court for the District of Washington (DDC) because the crime involved federal law, occurred on federal land such as a military base, or involved federal agencies like DEA, FBI, DHS. This can include minor traffic matters that occur along the George Washinton Parkway, around the Pentagon, or at the entrance to many nearby military bases.

Do I need a Federal Criminal Attorney?

Yes. Virginia and Washington DC federal crimes are extremely serious and usually carry more serious punishments. They are prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office and are usually supported by other government agencies such as Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). You need an attorney that is experienced and skilled at representing cases in Federal Courts as it is very different than state court.

In addition to the severity of the punishment, the criminal procedure and local rules are often more strict and unique to each jurisdiction. An experienced attorney is essential to providing the best representation to you in your federal criminal case.
